Anyone who is currently watching the comedy TV series Silicon Valley may be interested in one of writer Mike Judges earlier offerings. Office Space was released in 1999 and did ok at the box office. I have never worked in an office but anyone who ever has is going to totally understand the humour that just pours out of this very funny movie.
Office politics is taken to a whole new level as slacker Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) decides he is not going to quit his job he just going to do whatever it takes to get fired. He dismantles his cubicle, guts fish, ignores his boss and generally just doesn’t care anymore.
But this is the dumb world of giant corporations and ‘the guys from head office’ think his attitude is refreshing and innovative and may be just what they are looking for in upper management.
But he and his friends are already plotting to rob the company using a piece of software that steals pennies at a time. This puts them on a collision course as they try to steal the cash before all of Peter’s friends are ‘restructured’ out of the company.
Throw in an understated performance by Jennifer Aniston, some fantastic well observed writing by Mike Judge who was creator of Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill and you have a classic comedy. I must admit for me personally this put me off watching the movie as I was not a fan of the two cartoon series. But luckily I decided to watch it on DVD and have probably seen it a dozen times since.
The laughs are solid and the script is very well crafted, well worth seeing especially if you like Silicon Valley, you will love this.
