Rolling Stone had what’s usually called an ‘in-depth’ interview session with Johnny Depp just recently, and a few of his revelations may come as a surprise. His penchant for wearing cool shades all the time isn’t just a wardrobe statement; those are prescription shades and Johnny can’t see more than a few inches in front of his face without them.
The 50-year-old actor has had problems with his vision since early childhood, and says he’s as blind as the proverbial bat in his left eye and severely near-sighted in the other. According to Depp, the condition is untreatable; he’s been living and coping with it since he was very young. Clearly he copes quite well, judging by the way he’s managed to acquire major celebrity status and a handful of major awards for his acting ability, not to mention undeniable sex appeal.
Depp also made a few comments about his much-publicized break with Vanessa Paradis, after a 14-year relationship that never included marriage but did include two children. Lilly-Rose and Jack (14 and 11 respectively) are the main concerns, says their dad. More complicated but also ”more mature” than previous dis-engagements with model Kate Moss and actress Winona Ryder, Depp said the kids were the most important people in this particular scenario.
The star said, “In terms of the breakup, I definitely wasn’t going to rely on the drink to ease things or cushion the blow . . . . ‘Cause that could have been fatal. I felt it was my duty to be real clear throughout that. I had something serious to focus on, really, which was making sure that my kids were gonna be cool.”
Other than all that, Johnny is definitely more than just a pretty face with prescription glasses. The interview, published entire in the July issue of Rolling Stone (now on news stands) mentions quite a lot about the angst of being 50, single, way wealthy and still wondering who he’s gonna be when he grows up.
