Seeking A Friend for the End of the World, review trailer

It would be pretty unlikely to get a movie that would put together as a couple such as Steve Carell and Keira Knightley. However in this new film, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, the two are brought together without satisfying results.

The movie tells the story about the end of the world and how the two characters come together for one last shot at a romance before everything ends. The movie is somewhat let down by the director Lorene Scafaria as this is the first time she has directed and she fails to really find a defining theme for the film. The movie is part romance, part comedy, part dark humour and part just plain silly. This comes together to create a rather uncomfortable production that is never quite satisfying.

The hero of the film is a rather sad character of Dodge, played by Carell. One of the best scenes in the movie comes very early on and it is set at a party that is being held by some of Dodge’s married friends and sees a great deal of welcome faces. Even Carell’s real-world wife has a cameo part in the production as his on-screen wife.

The party has been organized as the world is going to end due to a meteorite hitting it. At the party all sorts of crazy things are going on as people shoot up heroin and kids play with fireworks. You get the serious feeling that the character of Dodge is rather boring and even at this crazy party where everyone knows they are going to die he still manages to be dull.

Unfortunately this early party scene, which is the highlight of the movie, ends rather quickly and from that point onwards the movie seems to focus on the rather strange element of romance, rather than the comedy.

He meets Keira Knightley, who is playing the character of Penny, while she is crying on a fire escape. Together they make the decision to leave New York. Dodge decides that he wants to hunt down a previous girlfriend who he left many years ago and Penny decides she wants to go to England to see her family before she dies.

Dodge tells Penny that he knows someone who has a plane and she decides to go with him so she can hopefully find a way to get to England. On the journey they come across many people who are dealing with the apocalypse in a wide variety of ways. These characters are entertaining and add a certain spice to the movie.

The characters begin to hint that the movie could be something more than it manages to be. Unfortunately the film instead focuses on the two lead characters as they go through the typical motions of a romance film. The funniest moments are all had by the characters on the side of the film and it is disappointing that they are not utilized more. This movie is all right, but it could have been a whole lot more than it is.
