Tom Cruise is a fascinating study in popularity. He is one of the most enduring and highest-grossing actors in cinema history and continues to bring in the big bucks after four decades in the business, and yet if you ask most people what they think of him, you’re likely to get an answer like this:
- “Can’t stand him.”
- “Eww, he’s creepy.”
- “I don’t like any of his films.”
Which is simply baffling considering how huge a deal he remains in 2016, 35 years after his movie debut. He is essentially the Nickelback of actors – you’ll struggle to find anyone who admits to liking him, yet most people must clearly be lying.
So let’s take a look at the usual reasons people give for why they hate on the Cruiser, point by point
1. “He doesn’t star in films I like”
You’re just lying to yourself there, really. Just look at this ruddy list:
- Risky Business
- Legend
- Top Gun
- The Color of Money
- Cocktail
- Rain Man
- Born on the Fourth July
- Days of Thunder
- A Few Good Men
- The Firm
- Interview with the Vampire
- Mission: Impossible
- Jerry Maguire
- Eyes Wide Shut
- Magnolia
- Mission: Impossible II
- Vanilla Sky
- Minority Report
- The Last Samurai
- Collateral
- War of the Worlds
- Mission: Impossible III
- Tropic Thunder
- Valkyrie
- Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
- Rock of Ages
- Jack Reacher
- Edge of Tomorrow
- Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation
And that’s not his whole filmography. If there’s not a movie in there that you like, then you don’t like movies. THE MAN HAS RANGE.

I couldn’t agree more. A common catchphrase across the internet. “Say what you will about Tom Cruise but….” he always gives 100% or always brings his A game. I enjoyed the latest Mission Impossible and Jack Reacher. In fact I even enjoyed Knight and Day. Beyond that, most dug Edge of Tomorrow or All You Need Is Kill or Live.Die.Repeat and it can’t all be because of Emily Blunt. On the other hand…

I think he has mastered the art of giving people what they want, he knows what the audience expects and that is what he delivers

Very cool but not quite as good as the opening MI scene where he is hanging by his fingers from a mountain which he apparently did without any safety equipment or hidden cables

I actually do enjoy his movies and let’s admit, he was pretty darn good looking when he was younger (shallow of me, yes, but hey). I think people have just gotten caught up in his personal life (as inevitably happens). I think we should appreciate actors/actresses as the artists they are, the role they portray and not the person they are outside of that – that aspect is all none of our business. On your list, I’ve enjoyed the majority of his roles!

Unfortunatly actors have to be very careful what they do off the big screen it can bring down even a huge star, as it nearly brought him down
