Not long ago GQ Magazine made the observation, or maybe prediction, that Ana de Armas “. . . is taking over Hollywood”.  A fairly extravagant statement, but in this case, where there’s smoke, there’s definitely fire.  Ana de Armas is a small Cuban force to be reckoned with.

Ana was born in 1988 in Havana, grew up there and at the age of fourteen was accepted to the National Theatre School, a highly prestigious institution that takes only twelve new students each year.

Precisely what talents and traits were developed prior to that are mostly unknown at this point, and her first appearance onscreen came after only two years, in a film called Una rosa de Francia. In 2007 she landed major roles in two more Spanish films, Madrigal and edén perdido.

When she moved to Madrid at the age of eighteen and got a starring role in a Spanish series called El Enternado, her portrayal of Carolina Leal, a central character who tended towards hair-raising adventures, began to generate more than local interest.

That show, by the way, is well worth a peek as it shows pretty clearly the potential of the teenager she was at the time. From that series Ana went on to another TV series, Havania, la leyenda, and several short films that didn’t get much attention.

In 2014 Ana took herself and her resume to Los Angeles, figuring that if she wanted a career as an actress in the big time that was her best move.  It seems that she figured correctly, and she has the credits to prove it.

She landed quite a few roles in films that did not become blockbusters, in fact some of them virtually disappeared from the movie news, but when she was teamed up with Keanu Reeves in 2015 it was Knock Knock – and here she is.

That film is more a semi-erotic horror story than anything else, but according to Ana it was great fun to make. She told an interviewer that Reeves’ innate tendency to remain aloof in emotional situations – and his dislike of the ‘touchy-feelie’ behavior of fans or even co-stars made it a delightful challenge to try and overreach the boundaries.

There was quite a bit of ad lib action, mostly condoned by director Eli Roth, and overall the film served to highlight Ana’s acting talents.Ana de Armas, War Dogs, Hands of Stone, filmography, photos, biography,,,..

If you watch a few of her interviews, the contrast between characters she plays and the sweet-faced, guileless young woman is amazing.  Ana comes across as a basically untouched and innocent presence, though she has developed a professional surface that may or may not be a veneer.

She’s as wide-eyed and enthusiastic as a kid when speaking to the movie press, but she has no problem projecting powerful emotions – including some serious rage – when the part calls for them.

Of her work in Knock Knock, Ana says that she learned a great deal from Keanu, that the role was challenging but overall a very enjoyable experience. In another interview – in which her Spanish accent is much more pronounced than her screen character’s – she also noted that all of the three main characters in Knock Knock considered themselves victims, which made the action and dialogue believable even though some critics dismissed the film as lacking depth

It’s not only interesting but downright impressive that when Ana first arrived in Los Angeles she barely spoke English. She had already completed filming on Hands of Stone, co-starring with Robert De Niro and Edgar Ramirez.

The ‘boxing flick’ was filmed in Panama and is due for release this month; it’s likely that her role as the wife of Roberto Duran (Ramirez) was one that clinched her determination to find roles featuring strong women with notable contributions to character and plot – not just ‘the wife’.

Ana has another film, due out this week in fact, that leaves something to be desired on that account, but still gives her a chance to demonstrate her considerable acting talents.  War Dogs (like Hands of Stone) is based on a true story, this one involving two small-time arms dealers who run afoul of the big guys, i.e. the U. S. government and the competition.  She plays the girlfriend in this case, and can hardly be heard over the gunfire and shouting, so we’ll have to wait for the next one, which is also coming soon.

Exactly what that role is has been kept under wraps, though filming is reportedly underway as of last month.  Also starring Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright and Dave Bautista, whose precise roles are also undisclosed at present, the movie is scheduled to be out in October of 2017.  When asked about the specifics and her role in the film Ana made one of the most quotable quotes we’ve heard lately- though we’re pretty sure it’s been made before.  “It’s the future.  Anything can happen,” she said,  and that is most certainly the case for Ana de Armas.

Dakota Johnson, Fifty Shades of Grey Star, Biography

DAKOTA JOHNSON, FIFTY SHADES OF GREY STAR,

DAKOTA JOHNSON, FIFTY SHADES OF GREY STAR,

Becoming an acclaimed actor or actress is the ultimate goal for countless millions of young people in all walks of life; attaining that goal is another matter, and relatively few aspiring thespians ever do so.

A surprising number of famous and semi-famous actors never even had such a goal – ‘celebrity’ just happened because of some combination of innate talent and fortuitous circumstances.

In the case of Dakota Johnson, it’s still hard to say how things will develop, but there is little doubt that her role in Fifty Shades of Grey will have a substantial impact on her career. Even though the film isn’t due for release until February of next year (2015), speculation and analysis is rife amongst those who keep close track of events in the film industry.

Born in Austin, Texas in 1989 to parents who are both well known in the industry, Dakota was familiar early on with celebrity and its often negative impact on those in the spotlight. Her father is Don Johnson (best known for his starring role in the popular 1980’s TV series ‘Miami Vice’), her mother is Melanie Griffith, an actress with a quite a history of her own.

Stories and gossip about her family were a burden during Dakota’s school years; she has recently revealed that other kids made sure she heard about every misstep taken by a volatile Mom and a TV sex-symbol Dad with an on-again-off-again marriage. She said her schoolmates used to present her with pictures and articles from tabloids that featured one or both of her parents misbehaving, to her embarrassment and chagrin.

Dakota actually made her film debut at the age of ten in Crazy in Alabama, in which she and her half sister Stella Banderas played the daughters of their real life mother, Melanie. The film received little notice at the time, but her early career as a model flourished during her high school years.

Dakota’s first notable film appearance was a scene with Justin Timberlake in Social Network, the movie that garnered eight Oscar nominations and won Best Picture in 2010. She was cast in a number of films after that, including a feature film based on the TV show ’21 Jump Street’ (she was one of the “Miley Cyrus-lookin” gals in a high school undercover operation), and several others nobody much recalls. She also co-starred in the short-lived Fox TV series ‘Ben and Kate”.

Now she’s got the role of Anastasia Steele opposite Jamie Dornan in Fifty Shades of Grey. She will be the focal character of the movie, along with Dornan, and fortunately (according to inside sources) the two work well together. However it remains to be seen whether the sexual tension and eroticism described in the book will come across that way on screen.

The fact that Dakota isn’t a big name in films up to this point only increases the interest in her performance as the sexual plaything of a very wealthy, arrogant (and quite charming) man who for reasons of his own is a sensual sadist – or a sadistic sensualist, but you get the idea. Her character is a naïve young woman who is initially intimidated and soon subjugated (with her permission) by the powerful, enigmatic Mr. Grey.

Since more than 100 million people have bought the book version, written by E.L. James and first published in Australia in 2011 then in the U.S. in 2012, the producers expect a good turnout at theatres.
If the internet buzz is anything to judge by, there will be more than enough publicity to insure that Dakota – and the rest of the cast – all get a good share of a large spotlight

Rita Ora, Fifty Shades of Grey star, biography

From chart-topping pop singer to a major role in one of the most-anticipated films in recent history, Rita Ora is radically updating her resume in the entertainment business. She’s been a recognized name on the music scene for a few years, but has little in the form of acting credentials compared to most of the headline cast of Fifty Shades of Grey.

Rita was born in Albania but grew up in West London; her family moved to England when she was just a year old. The record has it that she was named for Rita Hayworth, her grandfather’s favourite film star (grandfather being a film director himself). However she didn’t become a child star in films as many children and grandchildren of movie industry people seem to do. Instead she began a singing career at the age of seventeen.

Rita Ora, sexy promo shot

Information about Rita’s early career is still fairly sketchy, though more will surely be forthcoming as promotion for the movie-from-wildly-popular-book intensifies. Most of the U.K. knows her as the sultry singer whose first single “R.I.P.” came out at the top of the singles charts in 2012. Prior to that (in 2009) she had signed with Roc Nation immediately after a meeting with Jay-Z in New York. Her first album was reportedly two years in the making, but she says it was worth the effort.

Rita’s first major tour (October 2012) in the U.S. was also a huge success, though her New York concert had to be postponed due to Hurricane Sandy. In 2013 there was another highly successful tour through the U.K. – her ‘Radioactive Tour’ and by that time she had a number of hit singles including “How We Do (Party)”, “Shine Ya Light”, “Radioactive”, “Hot Right Now” and others. She’ll be releasing her second album this year.

There is not much gossip or fact so far recorded about the singer’s minimal acting credits; she appeared as a judge on Season 9 of ‘The X Factor’ , in a cameo on the TV series ‘90210’ and as a racer in the 2013 film Fast & Furious 6. Until Rita was tapped for the role of Christian’s adopted sister Mia in Fifty Shades of Grey, acting has not been her forte – unless it’s the enthusiastic, bold and bouncy persona that she exudes on stage when she’s performing.RITA ORA AND PIXIE GELDOF

So far about all that’s been revealed about her character in the film is that it will be “shocking” , presumably in comparison to her party girl image. All those millions who have read E.L. James’s erotic novel (‘Fifty Shades’ is the first in a trilogy) will have at least some idea what to expect of Rita’s character, but filming has been kept to closed sets and trailers have not yet appeared to give an indication.

It appears that she’s been getting along all right with her adopted (on screen) brother, as the actress who plays Christian’s mother, Marcia Gay Harden told Entertainment Weekly that Jamie Dornan (Christian) tends to break into song between takes, and “. . . he was singing a lot of Rita Ora.”

As for Rita, she has told an interviewer with Capital FM that filming was “fun” and that Fifty Shades of Grey is “. .. a great passionate movie.” She said that she loved the books, and added that everybody is going to watch the movie, even if they don’t admit it. She’s probably quite right, but meanwhile shooting is done for Fifty Shades, and Rita is back to music videos as of last sighting.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Star Trek, Biography

Benedict Cumberbatch, Star Trek, Biography

Benedict Cumberbatch, Star Trek, Biography

Versatile and adventurous would both be appropriate adjectives as applied to Benedict Cumberbatch, but those qualities apply to a great many in the entertainment field, so it’s necessary to elaborate a bit on the subject. A fellow who is equally and entirely believable as Sherlock the detective and Smaug the Dagon is a fellow to be reckoned with.

Cumberbatch at the age of 37 has become one of the most in-demand actors in British filmdom, with a repertoire and resume that range from the ridiculous to the sublime, sometimes both at once. His fan base has spread far beyond Britain, but the British definitely claim him as their own even if he did attend Harrow and suffers the perceived drawback of being ‘posh’.

Born in London and educated at boarding schools (including Harrow), Benedict has a lot of dramatic work under his belt. Beginning at the age of 12 as Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (for which he has since taken a fair amount of flack from talk shows hosts) he went on to the professional stage in a series of productions that included ‘Hedda Gabler’, which won him a nomination for the Olivier Award as best supporting actor (2005).

Since then Cumberbatch has performed extensively at the Royal National Theater and the Old Vic, rumor has it that he may be returning to the West End as Hamlet sometime this year. In the past ten years he’s been busy racking up plaudits from his television and film roles, with that of Sherlock Holmes tipping him from relative obscurity to stardom almost overnight, at least in the UK.

The way Benedict himself put it, he was the actor who got “. . . big parts in small films and small parts in big films”, but as of 2010, the same year ‘Sherlock’ was first aired in the UK and the U.S., the parts and the films got bigger. He had starring roles in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Warhorse, Star Trek Into Darkness and The Fifth Estate, in which he played the WikiLeaks hero/antihero Julian Assange.

He played both Frankenstein and his monster creation, alternating the roles with Jonny Lee Miller, in Danny Boyle’s adaptation of Frankenstein at the National Theatre in 2011, and both actors received the Olivier Award for their performances. That was before he came to international prominence, but Benedict says all that experience has gone into what he’s doing and hopes to do in future. He told a Guardian interviewer that maybe he’s being asked to do more because people have seen that he can.

If anything was needed to cement the name Benedict Cumberbatch in the minds of Oscar-watchers, the 2014 Academy Awards presentation in Hollywood this past weekend should do it. The British actor, up to now still best known to many as Sherlock Holmes, performed in four of the Oscar-nominated films from 2013.

He had notable roles 12 Years a Slave (which won Best Picture) August: Osage County, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (as Smaug and the Necromancer) and Star Trek Into Darkness, as the villain Khan. However, if you look for his picture amongst the celebrities, the first one you’re likely to see is completely disconnected from any film role – it’s all Benedict.

When the Irish rock band U2 lined up for a photo op, Cumberbatch performed what’s already being called a ‘Cumberbomb’ as he leapt into the air behind them with his arms raised and a trademark Cumberbatch “grinace” (that’s something between a grin and a grimace) on his face.

That shot will not soon be forgotten, but after all it’s just Cumberbatch having fun. When he gets serious, which he does to an amazing extent for all his exceedingly varied roles; there is seemingly no limit to his talents. He’s already signed on for at least two new movies, and so far his abilities and his energies show no sign of fading; they seem to grow along with his burgeoning career, and that’s the way he wants it to be.
