Saw the new movie “One Chance” last night, it was sort of under protest, my wife had seen the star of the film, James Corden, on a chat show and they had shown the trailer.  So here we have a movie about some overweight guy who works for Carphone Warehouse who dreams of becoming a great opera singer, not exactly The Shawshank Redemption.

He goes through all kinds of trials and tribulations including an audition in front of his hero, Pavarotti. All-in-all, apart from the slight possibility of having a girlfriend, this guy really has nothing going on in his life.

His whole life is pretty much a miserable failure, which is what I thought this movie would be. After all who is interested in a movie about some guy whose only real option left in life is to appear on Simon Cowell’s show Britain’s Got Talent.

Well, what a surprise, James Corden is amazingly good as Paul Potts the phone salesman who became an opera star. There are endless funny moments spread throughout the film, there are ups and downs, and even some serious issues.

Alexandra Roach is wonderful as the mousy but strong girlfriend, Paul’s mother is played by Julie Walters, so that can only be a good thing. Colm Meaney plays the seemingly mean-spirited father who is far from supportive.

But when you mix all of this together out comes a very funny, very well scripted, excellently acted, and smoothly directed piece of classic British cinema.
